MetaMask Exits Ethereum Validators After Security Incident

MetaMask began exiting Ethereum validators after a security incident diverted staking rewards. Lido says affected validators could miss payouts for up to 45 days, with no user funds at risk.

MetaMask has begun exiting Ethereum validators tied to its staking operations after disclosing what it called an "ongoing security incident" affecting part of its infrastructure. The wallet provider, built by Consensys, said it found no immediate threat to user wallets, but moved to pull affected validators out of service as a precaution.

What happened in the MetaMask security incident

MetaMask disclosed the incident on Wednesday, September 30, saying it was "actively addressing and remediating the issue internally, in coordination with external partners and security advisors." The company has not published details on how its systems were compromised.

Ethereum security researcher Kaden reported on X that 18 of 19 MetaMask-operated validators that had earned payments for producing blocks sent those payments to an unexpected address, diverting an estimated 0.36 ETH. His analysis put the precautionary exits at roughly 17,000 validators holding about 523,000 ETH, though MetaMask has not confirmed those figures as of this writing, according to CoinDesk.

No funds at risk, but rewards are

MetaMask emphasized that its staking operations are non-custodial, meaning it does not hold withdrawal keys for client stake. The incident appears to involve the block-production fee address rather than the staked funds themselves, and neither MetaMask nor liquid-staking protocol Lido has reported any slashing.

Lido confirmed that MetaMask-operated validators in its DeFi staking pool have begun the exit process, with the last expected to stop staking by October 7. Withdrawing and re-staking the coins could take up to roughly 45 days because of Ethereum's validator queue, during which affected validators will miss rewards and could face downtime penalties. "No action is required from stETH holders," Lido said.

Unrelated wallet movements add to the noise

The disclosure coincided with large, unrelated wallet movements that drew attention from on-chain trackers. A wallet linked to Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin reportedly moved 133,298 ETH, worth about $356 million, though it remains unclear whether the transfer was connected to the incident. Stablecoin issuer Ethena also pulled funds from lending platform Morpho as a precaution before redeploying them once the situation became clearer.

The MetaMask security incident adds to a difficult stretch for crypto infrastructure security broadly, with several unrelated protocols reporting breaches or precautionary shutdowns in the same week. For validators and stakers, the episode is a reminder that staking rewards, not just principal, depend on an operator's infrastructure staying secure.

What to watch next

MetaMask has not said publicly how attackers gained access to the systems behind the diverted block-production fees, and the company has given no firm timeline for a full post-mortem. Security researchers are watching for whether the MetaMask security incident is linked to any of the other infrastructure breaches reported across the industry this week, or whether it was an isolated failure specific to MetaMask's validator setup.

For now, the practical impact is limited to the roughly 17,000 validators that MetaMask has pulled offline as a precaution. Users who stake ETH through MetaMask or hold stETH via Ethereum-based liquid staking do not need to take any action, according to both MetaMask and Lido. Anyone running their own validator infrastructure may want to review fee-recipient configurations in light of the incident, since that is the specific mechanism Kaden's research pointed to. CryptoCloudNews will update this story as MetaMask and Lido release more information about the remediation process and the eventual re-staking timeline for affected validators.
